Martin Luther King Holiday

The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday is a very important day that can bring incredible discussion in classrooms & at home. Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted everyone to know that it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it is what is on the inside that is important. A simple way to teach that is by first reading one of the great stories about Martin Luther King, Jr. to the children. Ask questions about the story. What did Martin Luther King, Jr. believe in? etc. Then, hold up a Scratch Art Scratch Lite piece of paper. Ask the children what they see. (It is just a plain sheet of black paper.) In front of them, start drawing with the stylus. A rainbow of colors will apprear. Ask them what they see now. The lesson is to teach the children that it is important what is in the inside, not the outside. Have the children then draw their own dream with a piece of Scratch Lite Scratch Art. You can hang these in windows to show their beautiful work.
